Subject: Houses

There is a very large house near a river with lots of trees but there are also other suburban style houses around. It has two distinct stories which are arduous to go between: lots of stairs and locked doors, but I can always go through if I want to.

The upstairs level is very standard in terms of furniture while the downstairs area is full of plush furniture but all the walls are glass. I find the glass walls beautiful and relaxing in the day but they scare me when the dream action takes place at night.

This same house is a recurring dream location where a variety of different scenarios take place. The situations are never recurring, only the location is. This is not a house known to me in waking life at all.

The dream scenarios almost always take place in the lounge room of one or the other floor and very occasionally the upstairs bathroom. The various situations can be anything from the completely mundane to the bizarre.

The other players in the dreams are never people from my current life. They're either people from the distant past, or people I don't know.

The downstairs seems to be more associated with fear or apprehension, the upstairs with romantic scenarios but these are not always the case.

Hi Lara,

Welcome to the forums!

Here are some starters for you:

When a house in a dream is not known to us in waking life, it often symbolises the parts of the self. In waking life we inhabit our homes, in dreaming life we see the shape and style of the body-mind we inhabit and shape/create.

The different areas and rooms of the dream house tend to reflect the different areas of our mind and/or body.

In the same way, the different levels of the dream house tend to reflect the different levels of our being. We should never generalise in dream analysis as so much about a dream needs to be taken into account, but it is fair to say that moving between levels in a dream often indicates a dream shift in perspective between the level of the physical/body (ground) to the level of the mental-emotional/mind, to higher levels such as the spiritual/soul. Other changes in levels are reflected through this metaphor as well. For example, levels of happiness, depression and so on.

Your dream windows look out onto the world, but, as you say, they also allow the world to look in on you. In your dream house you are happy by day (when you can look out) but you feel uncomfortable by night (when you feel exposed). You also feel uncomfortable about the basement or darker areas of your dream house. Combining these factors tends to suggest an uneasiness about the unconscious (what is dark, not yet known), and a discomfort with how things might be if light were shone into these areas. This is an entirely natural feling to have, especially when you stand on the edge of deciding whether or not to plunge into the greater parts of yourself and your mind through your dreams.

I love the fact that your dreams are being considerate enough to provide you with one dream house alone! You can watch for signs of change or different levels of being and interpret these as the background factors to the foreground dream drama. You may also find, as you delve more into your dreams, that new rooms appear, or old rooms are renovated and changed. You may even change dream house.

Hopefully this gives you some insight, Lara. How about posting an example of one of your dreams for everyone to read and make suggestions for you?
