Hi John,
Thank you for your sense of humour (I have one of those as well).
Here's a starter for you:
The previous occupants: suggest previous thoughts, attitudes, desires of yours.
Dreams love creating visual puns, and it is possible that 'can' means 'can' as in "able to".
The cans were large: a dream ploy for emphasis.
'5 litre': any number in a dream (or in the telling of the dream) may be significant. For example, where were you at (previously/ previous occupant) five years ago/ five months ago ....?
There were four cans. What does 'four' mean to you? It can be a symbol of rationality (squares have four sides and corners ... rational 'straight' thinking). Is it a dream pun on "for' or "fore'?
Food: nourishment for you/ self nourishment.
Cupboard: place where potential nourishment is stored.
(What is stored in your mind or heart, that you CAN do ...?)
Your cat: what does your cat represent to you personally? How do you FEEL about having this cat in your life and about feeding it? Ponder ... you may discover a personal association with your cat.
But hey! The food was puppy food! Write down three words to describe the personality of a puppy ... the kind of puppy that's in your mind right NOW:
So .... now ... the puppy you CAN feed is a part of yourself .. you may just have noted some keywords in the above exercise.
Yellow ..... what does this colour make you feel?
Sometimes yellow is used as a warning colour .. or as 'home brand' .... it frequently comes up in dreams to indicate consciousness/ intellect (the yellow sun as opposed to the moon in the dark sky, the yellow sand as opposed to the hidden depths of the sea.)
Please excuse note-form of reply: I wanted to answer but had limited time and I also had the feeling that giving you questions would elicit a good gut-reaction feeling within you for the meaning of your dream. (Hope you can digest it well ... the kind of gut reaction that facilitates the flow of life!)
May your dream recall flow back and grace your waking days.
