Subject: Booming real estate and renovations

I went to visit this very private friend and suddenly found myself not on the porch but inside his house. I thought he'd be cross with me for overstepping the boundaries but he wasn't. He was busily and happily renovating his house, (specifically banging nails into a recently and solidly installed verandah), a rather nice colonial right on the water.

Very nice spot I thought. Then I recognised the location. I'd had a house on this street myself. It had the most fantastic views. I couldn't be sure if it was in fact the very house my friend was proudly renovating.

Then my friend's mobile rang. It was for me! It was the artist husband of a very good friend of mine trying to organise for the three of us to get together. I was really delighted to hear from them and organised a get-together.

I must add that although I haven't dreamed about houses for a while (a few years), houses are a recurring dream theme of mine. I do revisit the same houses and while they used to be in dreadful need of repair (and I never had the money to renovate) in more recent dreams the houses have been renovated or, once, even palatial.

Overview Interpretation & Dream Alchemy Practice suggestion

OVERVIEW INTERPRETATION

Hi Patsy,

Houses often represent your self, in mind and body. Those old recurring dreams of houses in need of repair would have represented your own thoughts and beliefs that were breaking down at the time. Your physical health may also have been in need of some repair. In those dreams you didn’t have the money to renovate, suggesting that you were unable to connect with the inner resources necessary to envision creating better beliefs and ways of thinking.

In your more recent dreams you have revisited those older houses only to find that they have already been renovated. These dreams review your progress. It’s often the case that you don’t notice the small day to day changes and breakthroughs but when you look back, in hindsight, you see your way of life, your beliefs and attitudes have changed enormously – sometimes, as evidenced by some of your renovated houses – the changes can be palatial.

But let’s look at the specific dream:

You went to visit a very private friend but found that things had changed. Instead of protecting his privacy he is opening up his house by adding a veranda (for all the rooms to open onto) and feeling comfortable about you being in the interior of the house (instead of on the porch). No longer private, he is open. You hadn’t realised his house was on the water, presumably with the potential for fantastic (open) views. The dream is reflecting your own increasing comfort with being more open, especially to emotional matters (represented by the sea) and the heart (the interior of the house).

You had expected him to be cross (angry) with you for overstepping the boundaries but he was happy and busy. Where in your life have you been extra protective of your personal boundaries, and cross with anyone who overstepped them? The renovation in your dream suggests that anger had, in the past, closed your heart to some extent, or caused you to retreat into a more private world, but now, this anger has been replaced by happiness, busyness and more of an open view.

Then came the communication from an artist suggesting a get-together. Your dream shows you are ready to integrate (get together) new qualities into your life. Think about these three people: are they more open too or are you ready to integrate your artistic talents, perhaps expressing your heart in a more open way?

You will find it helpful to read ‘Renovations and house hunting’ in Dream Alchemy, pages 206-11 and pages 95-7 in ‘Dream Alchemy’ on personal boundaries.

DREAM ALCHEMY PRACTICE

Artwork:

Make or buy an item representing the sea view (or collect some beach pebbles) to place artistically in the centre of your home. Then make or buy an item representing a feeling or talent you once protected that you are now ready to share with the world and place it artistically outside your home – perhaps on the veranda. What you are doing here is following the happy reflection of your dream, welcoming a fantastic view into your heart while expressing something of your heart in the world.

Important:

Do your artwork dream alchemy practice alone. This is your contemplation time. Exploring your feelings as you do your artwork is an important part of the alchemy.

How does this work?

By working with dream elements and symbols in art form you are communicating with your unconscious mind in its own language to create change, to explore your feelings or to resolve past issues.

ORIGINAL THREAD

Below is the original forum discussion on this dream, contributed before Jane Teresa's 2004 interpretation.

Hi Patsy,

Houses represent our inner selves, so if they were once in need of repair, but are now renovated, it means you have been working successfully at understanding yourself and doing positive things with that understanding.

"A very private friend" seems to be your unconcious mind and there are now no "boundaries" between your "selves".

Verandahs bring the outer world closer to the inner one and water represents emotions, so you are wanting to be closer to those, too.

Maybe the "three of us" represents your mind, body and spirit and you've received a call to get them together.

Another thought about the title. Perhaps your "real state" is looming, and you only need to do a bit more work to make it palatial.

:)

Hi, I was very boosted and encouraged to hear your incredibly positive interpretations. Hope you're right and my integrated "real" state is right round the corner. Thanks again.
