Subject: BURSTING FISHTANKS AND SEX

Helen

19:26 15/03/2002

I was at a male friend’s house and was socialising with a number of friends. They were all men, no-one I knew in real life.

There was one in particular I liked and had known for a very long time back in our twenties and then hadn't seen for ages. Anyway this particular friend went out and sat in his car waiting for me to join him, but I was having such a good time chatting to these other men that I wasn't getting around to getting out there.

We were all standing in front of this enormous fish tank and commenting on the incredible pressure that must be being exerted by the water because of its size.

Suddenly, my male friend (whose house it was) got impatient and drove his car into the house smashing the fish tank. He didn't seem to be mad or anything, just impatient.

Everyone one else left at that point and he and I started to get "very cosy".

Fish symbolism has been associated with sex for a very long time. A tank containing little swimming fish that bust from anticipation seems to represent 'premature ejaculation'. It seems that in this dream you are the teaser and enjoy having to focus of attention squarly on you. Did you enjoy making the other man wair or was it because you were preoccupied with teh attention of all the other men? Have you recently taken on a new job where men are around you? Or maybe the fish tank represents a longing to conceive and give birth. What hapeened to the fish? They obviously represnt sperm. Man, that was a high octane dream, girl.

Hi Helen and Tom, I have to say that I get a totally different reading of this dream. I see the fish tank symbolising emotion as water usually does and your comments about pressure indicates that maybe you are or have been under enormous (to use your word) emotional pressure. The wonderful thing is that your inner male (represented by the men in the room whom you enjoy and feel comfortable with - great!) has dealt with that and released all this pressure and you have gone on to integrate this aspect of you with yourself. Make sense? What do you say Tom?

PS Helen made no mention of any actual fish, hence the message is about the water and the container = pressure.

Hi Helen, Tom and Nani,

Adding a further layer:

When the friend drove into the house, did he smash any walls, or was the entry easy? If he smashed walls, then you have two bursts in the dream: the car bursting through the house and the tank bursting.

The reason I mention this is that, yes, as water does tend to represent emotion, the main emotion in the dream was the waiting friend's impatience. Impatience "drives" us to ... to what? To "bursting point" perhaps?

Sex in a dream often underlines integration. I wonder, Helen, if you were integrating impatience at the time of this dream OR simply recognising that you have been feeling impatient whether or not you are expressing this appropriately.

The glass tank broke - breakthrough! If impatience has been building up within you, Helen, (unconsciously or consciously), could it be that in recognising this you reach some kind of breakthrough?

Yes, fish in water (and especially in a fish tank) can symbolise sperm (in a contained vessel, pre-ejaculation or in the uterus, post-ejaculation) - they also often represent spirituality. (As with all things dream, a "this symbol means this" approach is generally not workable.)

Yes - there was no mention of fish in the dream - but the repeating symbol: men, sex ... may underline this possible symbolism.

Sperm bursting through could be release of creativity (production), especially of Yang production (outer world).

Impatience around expressing yourself, Helen, productively in the outer world????

Any other thoughts out there? The longer these threads, the better!

Hi Nani, Tom and Jane, Thankyou for all your interesting interpretations. From a weird, innocuous little dream, suddenly it feels like my subconscious is trying to tell me something important. At the end of the dream ..or rather at the point where it started to become "cosy" it woke me up (which was disappointing really ..considering!) but maybe it did that to be sure I would remember it.

Firstly, this impatient male seemed only to break the fishtank (no exterior walls of the house seemed to be involved).. Although in the dream there seemed to be only men at this gathering, my involvement with these other guys seemed only like " oh, great to catch up with friends" (rather than sexual)... but there was something "special" about this other guy waiting in the car. No, I didn't have any sense about teasing him by making him wait. And although in the dream I identified this great glass cage as a fishtank I don't really remember the fish..nor the water or fish spilling out once the tank was broken open...only that this man had broken it because he was tired of waiting...(which in the dream seemed perfectly reasonable)!! No, I haven't taken on a new job, but I graduate from a Fine Arts course at the end of the year and I guess am starting to wonder how I will support myself.

I think from reading your interpretations that the dream was possibly about impatience around creative productivity that is FINANCIALLY LUCRATIVE. Am I trying to tell myself that I needn't worry because I CAN support myself creatively in the outer world or am I reading too much into this?

Blah blah blah, I still think it was sexual. I am a male after all.
